Family IDs woman killed in murder-suicide shooting at Aveda Institute in Davie
Family members have identified a young woman who was killed in a murder-suicide shooting outside the Davie beauty school she attended.
Aileen Martinez, 20, was killed in Tuesday’s shooting outside Aveda Institute South Florida, family members said in a news release Thursday.
Martinez, of North Miami, was a student at Aveda Institute studying cosmetology and had studied at a Miami music school for the past four years, often performing with local bands.

She leaves behind her parents, a brother and a sister.
“We are heartbroken that our daughter was taken from us,” her parents said in a GoFundMe. “We take solace in knowing she celebrated life to the fullest while she was with us, and we find comfort in believing she is now at peace. We condemn the violence and stalking that led to this unimaginable loss. No parent should have to bury their child, and no one should ever live in fear for choosing to walk away from a relationship.”
Davie Police said the shooter was a 25-year-old man who turned the gun on himself, and said the two had previously been in a relationship.
The shooting prompted a massive police response to Aveda Institute, with a stretch of University Drive shut down and nearby schools placed on lockdown as a precaution.
In multiple 911 calls, witnesses and people who heard the gunshots can be heard making desperate pleas for help.
“Hurry, could somebody please bring a cop, somebody got shot at the Aveda Institute on University,” a woman says in one call. “We don’t know exactly what’s going on, we’re inside the building, we heard gunshots outside, one of the students went outside, said that they saw someone with a gun, pointing at a car and they’re also saying they passed by the car and there’s a dead person laying down in the car.”
The family said funeral and burial arrangements for Martinez were underway.
