Driver killed in crash on I-5 North

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The Sorrento Valley Road off-ramp from I-5 north was closed to traffic Friday morning due to a fatal crash, CHP and Caltrans report.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports a 65-year-old man was driving a silver Hyundai Sonata and entered the freeway from the Genesee Avenue on-ramp driving fast just after 10 a.m. Friday.

The car, for reasons still under investigation, went across all lanes of the 5 freeway and hit the center divider wall, then veered back across the lanes and hit a freeway sign before crashing into the beginning of the guardrail at the Sorrento Valley Road off-ramp, according to CHP.

SkyFOX/KUSI in the Sky was overhead around 11 a.m. where police could still be seen blocking all lanes of the Sorrento Valley Road off-ramp from the 5 freeway next to the car that had heavy front-end damage.

The car came to rest after colliding with the start of the guardrail and was still sitting there at 11:30 a.m. while police worked to investigate.

Paramedics at the scene had to perform life-saving measures, including CPR, on the victim. CHP reports the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim's name is being withheld pending family notification by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.

Caltrans reports the Sorrento Valley Road off-ramp lanes from I-5 north were closed to traffic at 11 a.m. Traffic on I-5 was backed up to Genesee Avenue; however, traffic could still be seen moving slowly.

Caltrans said in an update that all lanes fully reopened to traffic at 1:09 p.m.

Some drivers passing by were reporting to CHP that there was still a lot of debris in the lanes and they were swerving to avoid it.

CHP reports a toxicology report is pending through the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were a factor in the crash.

Anyone who may have witnessed this crash is asked to contact the CHP San Diego Area directly at 858-293-6000.
