Director Rob Reiner's son arrested in connection with parents' deaths

Nick Reiner, the son of movie director Rob Reiner, was being held in jail early Monday with bail set at $4 million, jail records showed.

While the records do not list any charges, law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBC LA Nick Reiner was being jailed on suspicion of murder following the deaths of his parents.

Nick Reiner, who police initially declined to name as a suspect, was arrested at 5:04 a.m. local time by LAPD detectives, according to jail records. It was not immediately known if Nick Reiner has legal representation.

The bodies of Rob and Michele Reiner were discovered Sunday afternoon at the couple’s home in Brentwood, California, and pronounced dead by LA Fire Department paramedics. A source close to Reiner confirmed to NBC News that Reiner and his wife had apparent stab wounds.

Police sealed off the home and surrounding streets while conducting their investigation of the crime scene overnight.

Rob Reiner is an Oscar-nominated filmmaker and actor known for his films “This Is Spinal Tap,” “A Few Good Men,” and “When Harry Met Sally.”

Nick Reiner, 32, has spoken publicly over the years about his struggles with drug addiction, which began in his teens. He told People in an interview in 2016 that he cycled in and out of treatment facilities with bouts of homelessness and relapses in between.

“I spent nights on the street. I spent weeks on the street. It was not fun,” Nick Reiner told People, adding that, “If I wanted to do it my way and not go to the programs they were suggesting, then I had to be homeless.”

These experiences inspired the semi-autobiographical 2016 film “Being Charlie,” which was directed by Rob Reiner, co-written by Nick Reiner and featured actor Cary Elwes, famous for appearing in Reiner’s classic “The Princess Bride,” as the main character’s father. The plot focuses on a young man struggling with addiction who has been in and out of rehab.

Reiner reflected on the real-life challenges and how they influenced the movie in an interview with the LA Times in 2015.

“It was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows,” Rob Reiner said. “And then making the movie dredged it all up again.”
