Child, 3, drowns after falling into pool in SW Miami-Dade: Sheriff

A 3-year-old child drowned after falling into a pool in Southwest Miami-Dade on Saturday, deputies said.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at 11931 SW 132 Ave. after receiving reports of a drowning.

When they arrived at the scene, the child was taken out of a pool and was rushed to the hospital, where they died.

Police said the family was sleeping when the child went into the pool in the backyard and fell in.

After they woke up, they started to perform life-saving measures before paramedics arrived.

“We’re asking for the community’s prayers and thoughts with this family; it’s something of an unimaginable tragedy,” an official said.

Data from 2024 in Florida shows that 119 children died from drowning, which was an increase from previous years and set a new record.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are ways parents can prevent drownings, which include the following:

  • learning water safety skills
  • learning basic swimming
  • build fences around pools that are at least 4 feet high with self-closing latches.

“Take a moment to ensure our pool safety plans are in place, that we have the proper alarms, the proper lock, the proper fencing,” an official said.

An investigation into the drowning remains active.
