Aveda Institute student killed in murder-suicide at Davie school involving ex: Police
A student at a beauty school in Davie was killed in a murder-suicide shooting Tuesday involving her ex-boyfriend, police said.
The incident unfolded outside the Aveda Institute South Florida in the 4100 block of University Drive.
In a statement Wednesday, Davie Police said the victim was a 20-year-old student of the school and the shooter was a 25-year-old man.
The two had previously been in a relationship, police said.
The woman was killed at the scene and the shooter was taken to a local hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and later died from his injuries, police said.
Officials haven’t released their identities but said they’ve contacted their families.
The incident was isolated and there was no threat to the community, police added.
The shooting prompted a massive police response to Aveda Institute, with a stretch of University Drive shut down and nearby schools placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Aerial footage showed the woman’s body inside a car that had apparent bullet holes in the Aveda Institute parking lot.

Witnesses described the chaos as the shooting unfolded.
“We were all in the middle of a break and I was inside the break room getting a Red Bull when I heard girls coming in the classroom and screaming and then I sent a text message to my group chat and I told them to stay inside the classroom and then we all went in, my teacher went outside to see what was going on, and we had all the doors locked and then we heard there was a shooting going on,” Emily Sosa said. “Everyone was kind of running around frantically so we didn’t know if he was inside or outside or what was going on, so then we all had the doors locked until an officer came and got us.”
Police are still investigating.
