According to the San Diego Police Department, officers conducted the roadblock in the 2400 block of Grand Avenue from 10 p.m. on Saturday to 2:30 a.m. on Sunday.

A total of 944 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint, with 22 drivers undergoing a secondary evaluation. Authorities said nine of those drivers were ultimately arrested on suspicion of DUI. Additionally, one driver was cited for driving without a license or with a suspended license.

"DUI/Driver License checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries," SDPD stated in a press release. "Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $13,500 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out."

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

SDPD said additional DUI patrols can be expected as authorities seek to lower death rates and injuries connected to impaired drivers.
