54-year-old cyclist struck and killed in West Philly hit-and-run, police say

A 54-year-old cyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run the Overbrook neighborhood of West Philadelphia on Saturday morning, police said.

According to police, the crash happened at around 3:44 a.m. at the intersection of North 56th Street and Lancaster Avenue when a red SUV, possibly a Jeep Grand Cherokee, struck the cyclist as he attempted to make a left turn.

Both the cyclist and the SUV were initially traveling westbound on Lancaster Avenue, with the cyclist trailing behind the car. However, the cyclist — who has not yet been identified — tried to make a left turn southbound onto North 56th Street when he was struck by the SUV, police said.

The SUV initially appeared to swerve and then continued westbound on Lancaster Avenue, fleeing the scene, police said.

The cyclist was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:47 a.m., police said.

The crash is being investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department, and anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 215-686-TIPS (8477) or anonymously online here.
