4-year-old horse dies during Breeders' Cup race at Del Mar

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A 4-year-old horse died after being injured during a Breeders' Cup race over the weekend, the second horse death in a week at the Del Mar Racetrack.

She's Quality (IRE) died from injuries sustained during the Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint on Saturday. This was her first race outside of Europe.

The official race chart said "She's Quality was off slow to begin and dropped back, pulled up at the half-mile pole and was transported off the track via equine ambulance." Her trainer, Jack Davison, said in a statement She's Quality passed away after suffering a pelvic fracture during Race 5.

The horse was transported to the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital where her condition worsened overnight and she was humanely euthanized, Davison said. "We are utterly devastated at her passing."

4-year-old She’s Quality had 24 career starts and four first place finishes, according to her horse profile.

She’s Quality was the second horse to die at Del Mar Racing this week in the first three days of the Bing Crosby Season, after the Opening Day racing death of Esmeray.

The Del Mar Racetrack announced 5-year-old Esmeray (IRE) was humanely euthanized after suffering a catastrophic injury to her hind right leg during the fifth race on Thursday, Oct. 30.

The deaths of She’s Quality and Esmeray now bring the total to four horse deaths at the Del Mar Racetrack in 2025, according to the California Horse Racing Board’s list of equine fatalities.
