1 person killed, another hurt in shooting outside cosmetology school in Davie

One person was killed and another was critically injured in a shooting near multiple schools in Davie on Tuesday afternoon, prompting a massive law enforcement response, officials said.

Multiple law enforcement officers responded to the 4100 block of South University Drive outside Aveda Institute South Florida, a cosmetology school, and Know-It-All Preparatory School next door, just after 2 p.m.

Davie Police confirmed the shooting happened in the parking lot outside Aveda Institute and left one person dead at the scene.

Police haven’t said what led to the incident but said they’re weren’t looking for anyone in connection with the shooting.

Davie Fire Rescue officials said they responded to the shooting scene and took a patient to a nearby hospital. Police said that person was in critical condition.

Police didn’t release the identities of either person involved in the shooting, and didn’t say whether they worked at Aveda, were students there, or knew each other.

Aerial footage showed multiple officers at the scene with weapons drawn and at one point, authorities closed off a portion of the Aveda parking lot with yellow crime scene tape.

Authorities were checking out a white vehicle that appeared to have possible bullet holes and what looked like a body in the passenger seat.

A white vehicle with apparent bullet holes is seen at the scene of a shooting in Davie on Jan. 27, 2026.

One student who goes to Know-It-All Prep said there was a code red at the school.

“There was like a code red on the radio and we didn’t know if it was real or not, so we were just in class earlier,” the student said. “We just all huddled up near the desk and everything and we had to be quiet.”

Monica May said she was getting her hair done inside the beauty school when the shooting happened.

“All of a sudden, all the girls started jumping off chairs and running around. It was chaos, and they weren’t telling us what was going on,” May said.

She started recording on her cellphone as police evacuated everyone from the building.

“It was just chaos, and it was just a lot,” May said. “Police officers with their rifles up.”

May said she later talked with two people who told her they saw the shooting.

“(They said) We saw when he was standing with the gun shooting in the window and shot her six times,” she said.

Nearby St. David Catholic School was also placed on lockdown.

“I literally broke down and cried because it was unbelievable,” May said.

Aveda Institute said they would be closed the rest of Tuesday and on Wednesday.

“The safety and security of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority,” a spokesperson said in a statement, adding that they were cooperating with law enforcement.

No other details were immediately known.
